Stan 'James Pond' Soboleski
In case you've been wondering, yes, that is Stan Soboleski starring as one of the chatty co-hosts of Universe Cellular and Dish's local television infomercial airing across Central New York. But for Soboleski, better known as James Pond since joining Watertown's Froggy 97 (WFRY) in 1997, it has been radio where he has spent the last 17 years honing his broadcast chops.
Stan got his start in 1987 at WSCP as a part-time jock, eventually working his way all the way up to the overnight slot. Then it was off to Star 105 (WGES) in Oswego, 62 WHEN, where he served under program director Peter King, and six years of part-time work with Rich Lauber at B104.7 before he landed (or, as we feel obliged to say) 'hopped' over to Froggy 97 where he currently keeps busy as the station's program director and morning air personality.
But that's all radio stuff. We need to know what's up outside of the studio.
So, we asked him...
Which three famous people (dead or alive) would you invite to dinner?
The Pope, Johnny Cash, and Donald Trump.
What annoys you most about the business?
Too much starch in the collar. This is radio, folks! We need more personality and less liner card readers. Plus voice tracking and syndication. Local! Local! Local! That's the key, mister!
What CDs are you embarrassed to admit you own?
Barry Manilow, Olivia Newton John, and Neil Sedaka. Own 'em all! "Down dooby do down down..."
Which show would you rather be on and why: Survivor, The Apprentice, or Fear Factor?
The Apprentice. It's the perfect reality show. I love the art of business. When all is said and done, the winner is always the one who thinks outside of the box and makes it work without bitching. Please let us not forget the Donald is one really cool Kat!
Which song at your station would you not shed a tear for if it never came up again in rotation?
I am not un-American, but Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA." I am just tired of it.
And "When You Say Nothing at All" by Allison Krauss. Nuff said!
What talent would you most like to have?
To have the pipes of Josh Groban and not William Hung.
What's your dream vacation?
Anywhere with my fiancée. She's beautiful! We both love the Caribbean. Life is good!
Name something about yourself that would surprise most people.
That my fiancée and I have several apartment houses in Watertown and Syracuse, and a successful business. Real estate rocks baby!
If you weren't in radio, what would you be doing for a living?
I would be doing real estate full time or running our other businesses.
What's your shoe size?
