FCC's Michael Copps to attend SU town meeting

SYRACUSE -- The Newhouse School at Syracuse University is teaming up with Clear Channel Communications to host a two-hour public "town meeting" next week to discuss current media hot topics.

The panel discussion, "Broadcaster Obligations to their Communities: Is the Public Interest Standard Still Relevant?", will feature FCC Commissioner Michael Copps who, with other panelists, will address topics as varied as indecency, political coverage and advertising, and media ownership.

Also included on the panel: David O'Neil, Washington D.C. media attorney from Rini, Coran; Cheryl Leanza, Deputy Director of the non-profit, telecommunications law firm The Media Access Project, and Dick Novik, Sr Vice President of the New York State Broadcasters Association and a member of the NYS Emergency Communications Committee. Terence Smith, Media Correspondent and Senior Producer for the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, will be moderator.

The symposium, which is free and open to the public, will be held in Studio A, NCC I, from 1 pm - 3 pm, on Thursday, April 1. The entrance is on Waverly Avenue, under the awning.
